We will be have some school activities in the morning and then things will be back to normal after first break. In Math, we will be looking at ways of collecting and organising data. Students will be actively involved in collecting data on pumpkins and then working with the numbers. In Reading, we will continue to look at visualising and summarising as comprehension strategies. In Writing, we will be looking at the "Rant" as a form of opinion and persuasive writing. In Science, we will be looking at a local biodiversity issue. Students will be taking on the role of investigative reporter as they research and analyse an environmental issue. This week will be a busy one! Happy Halloween!

Time is just flying by...
A note on Halloween: All students who wish to dress up for Halloween are asked to come to school in their costumes on Tuesday Oct. 31 (no masks or weapons). We will be having some school festivities during the morning block where students will have the oppertunity to show off their costumes. After first break students will have time to change out of their costumes if they wish or they can remain in them for the day. In Math, we will be continuing to explore how fractions can be represented and orderd. Towards the end of the week we will be collecting some data regarding pumpkins and will be using it to begin looking at data management. In Writing, we will be looking at Author's Purpose (Entertain, Inform, and Persuade) as well as adding to our writers tool kit by looking at other ways that authors make their writing interesting and engaging. In Reading, we will be looking at visualizing and making connections as reading strategies for understanding our class read aloud "The Wild Robot". We will also be looking at summarizing as a way to comprehend what you have read. In Science, we will be finishing our case study on "The wolves of Yellowstone" and students will begin examining a local issue related to biodiversity and the impacts that humans are having. I am looking forward to another great week of learning and growing! There is a lot happening in A3 this week.
In Math, we will be looking at fractions. Students will be exploring the concept of what a fraction is, what they represent, and how they are used in the real world. We will be learning to represent, compare, and order fractions using a variety of strategies. In Writing, we will be looking at some of the ways that writers come up with ideas for their writing. Students will be exploring a variety of writing topics and will be looking at some techniques that writers use to improve their writing. In Reading, we will be looking at the reading comprehension strategy, visualizing. During our read aloud and independent reading time students will be focusing on the mental pictures that pop into their heads while they are reading and what key language the author uses to create those images. In Science, we will be starting an examination of the impact that humans have on biodiversity by exploring the controversial issue of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park. Students will be asked to look at both sides of the issue and do some research on the topic. This week promises to be an exciting week! I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
This week we will be finishing writing our Hero Project. The final product will be due on Friday. We will also be learning how to use a new writing app called Write About. This is an online writing portfolio where students are engaged with weekly writing prompts. In Reading, we will be continuing our Read Aloud "The Wild Robot". Students will be engaging in some comprehension strategies and sharing their responses with the class. In Math, we will continue to investigate the use of variables in algebraic expressions. In Science, we will be exploring the plant kingdom briefly and then moving onto to looking at invasive species. This week is a short week, but will be filled with lots of learning! Bring on October!
It is hard to believe that we are already a month into the school year. Students have been working hard, practicing classroom and school expectations and procedures. Students are reminded that they are to line up in our spot at the warning bell, and then enter the school in a calm manner. Congratulations to John Darling for raising over $2500.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation. This is an incredible achievement! This week in Language, students will be continuing their research and biography writing on a Hero of their choice. Students are working on researching, finding important and relevant information and recording their finding in jot note form. They will then be writing a biography on their Hero. This will be done in the form of paragraphs. We will be reviewing paragraph structure and proper writing conventions. In Reading, we will be starting our class read aloud "The Wild Robot". Students will be asked to use visualizing and inferring as a comprehension strategy. In Math, we will be looking at large number addition and subtraction strategies as well as the use of variable in algebraic expressions. In Science, students will be continuing to explore the 5/6 Kingdoms of life focusing on the Animal Kingdom. This week will be full of learning! |
