'There is a lot going on in A3 this week! The Terry Fox Run is on Thursday. Students are asked to come prepared for lots of running. Don't forget to bring in your "Tonnies for Terry", our school's goal is $1500! We will need everyone's help to reach this! Every little bit helps.
In Language, we will be continuing our exploration into the life of Terry Fox. We will be creating a class biography of Terry Fox. Each student will be responsible for writing a paragraph of our class biography. Students will then be asked to choose a hero of their own, that they will be writing a biography on. As a part of this assignment they will need to prove that their hero is a "true hero" based on our classes criteria. In Math, we will continue to explore and work with large numbers. Students will be solving problems that ask them the consider the magnitude of a million. They will also be practicing their large number addition and subtraction skills. In Science, we will be diving deeper into the Linnaeus Classification System, exploring the process of classification. We will be zooming in on the Animal Kingdom to look at how animals are further classified with in the kingdom. The learning continues in A3!

Lots happening in A3 this week!
Wednesday is Picture Day, so remember to wear your smile! Friday is a P.D. Day, so there is no school for students. In Math, we will be turning our attention towards representing numbers. Students will be asked to find large numbers in the real world and represent them in a variety of ways. In Language, we will be continuing to critically analyze the concept of a hero. Students will be working together to co-create a list of 5 characteristics that all heroes must have. We will then be learning about Terry Fox and thinking critically about whether or not he is a hero based on our criteria. In Science, the grade 5s will continue to explore properties of matter through a variety of hands on experiments. The grade 6s will be diving deeper into biodiversity, starting with exploring the Animal Kingdom. Looking forward to a great week of learning! Week 2 is here!
We had a great first week of school. Everyone is settling in and getting back into the swing of things. We will continue to work this week to establish, review and rehearse classroom procedures and expectations. This week we will also start working on some curriculum, let the journey begin! In Reading, we will be setting up our independent and classroom library procedures. Students will be reading every day in class and it is the expectation that they have a novel that is kept in class. In writing, we will be setting up writer's workshop procedures. Students will be learning where writers get their ideas from and will have time to generate lots of ideas that they can come back to throughout the year. In Math, we will be continuing to explore mindsets in Mathematics and engage in open ended problems. In Science, that grade 5s will be starting their unit on the properties of and changes in matter. The grade 6s will be starting their unit on biodiversity. I look forward to a great week of learning! I am so excited to be teaching at John Darling Public School this year. I know it will be a fantastic year filled with adventures, explorations, and deep learning.
