It is hard to believe that December arrives this week. We are in the final 4 weeks of school before we head into the winter break, but things are not slowing down in A3!
We will be working hard this week on finishing up our biodiversity projects. Everyone has been working very hard to produce informative and attractive displays. We are very eager to share our learning with everyone so I hope that you will be able to join us for our Fall Convention on Thursday Nov. 30th, from 11:30 - 1:00. We are finally ready to start presenting our rants. Presentations begin tomorrow! I encourage you to help your child practice. We have some very creative writers in A3! In Reading, we will be continuing to look at summarizing as a comprehension strategy. In Math, we will be looking at constructing a variety of polygons using specific criteria. Students will be engaging in a variety of hands on problems. At the end of the week we will be having a small quiz. Review sheets will go home on Wednesday. I am looking forward to another exciting week of learning in A3!

This week is Bullying Awareness and Prevention week, which is recognized by schools all across Ontario. During this week we will be learning more about all forms of bullying and the effect that it can have everyone's learning and well-being. Everyday this week you are encouraged to ask your child what they learned about bullying in our schools and how they are going make our classroom/school a safer, happier, and kinder place.
This week we will be wrapping up two assignments that we have been working on for a while. Students will have one more day to finish up writing their rant. They will have a few days to practice and are encouraged to practice at home. We will begin presenting our rants on Thursday. For their biodiversity issue project students will have a few more day to collect their information. Once they have all their research collected they will begin to create their poster boards and visuals. We will be having an open house where students will have the opportunity to share their learning with parents and other classes. A date is not yet set but I will let you know as soon as we have one. In Math, we will be measuring, constructing, and sorting angles and polygons. In Reading, we will be continuing to look at summarizing as a comprehension strategy. In Writing, we will be returning to some mini lessons that will add to our writers tool box. The learning never stops in A3! November is just flying by!
Progress Reports go home on Monday. Friday is a P.D. Day with the afternoon being set aside for Parent-Teacher conferences. There is a letter going home in the Progress Report envelopes that contains more information about the conferences. In Reading, we will be looking at the comprehension skill of summarizing. Students will be asked to practice this skill using a variety of texts. In Writing, we will be finishing up our Rants. Students can begin to practice saying their rants at home so they are ready to present next week. In Science, we are finishing up our biodiversity issue research. This research will be presented in a convention style poster board. Students are taking all of the research that they have done on their issue and are creating a poster board presentation. They are also able to create some visuals for their presentation. Parents will be invited to the Biodiversity Convention to learn about all of the issues that our class has researched and see the learning that is taking place in A3. More information about the date and time of the convention will follow soon. In Math, we will be finishing up our investigations in data management. Students will be practicing graphing, calculating mean, median, and mode, collecting data, and interpreting graphs. In Art, we will be looking at the Elements of Design, focusing on Line and Value. The learning never stops in A3! This week, as always, will be a busy one. We have our Grade 6 Camp Trip to Ki-Wa-Y on Tuesday and the Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday.
For our trip on Tuesday, it is very important the students come dressed for the weather. It is going to be a bit chlly, but sunny, so layers will be important. Also, winter boots will help keep them warm and dry throughout the day. Students need to bring a litterless lunch and a resuable waterbottle. It will be a memorable day for everyone! In the classroom we will be busy working on a variety of learning goals. In Math, we will continue exploring the collection and organization of data. Students will be learning what makes a question good for a questionaire and how to collect data to answer a specific question or wonder. In Writing, we will continue to work on our rant writing. Students have chosen an endangered animal and are creating a "rant" from the perspective of their animal. Learning to include some persuasive techniques, voice and point of view along the way. In Reading, we will be looking at summarizing using the "Somebody... wanted... but... so... then..." template. This helps students remember that a summary is the gist of the story, not a retell. In Science, students will continue their research on a biodiversity issue. They need to know thier 5Ws of their chosen issue, how it is affecting biodiversity, the different organisms that are being impacted, the impact (both positive and negative) that humans are having on the issue and finally come up with an action plan to address the issue. This project will culminate in a Biodiversity Convention where students will have an oppertunity to share their issue with the school and parents. More details about this even to follow. |
