With this week being a short week, we will be working very hard to get everything done.
In Math, we will be exploring the concept of volume and capacity. Students will have a chance to actively engage in a variety of hands-on activities that will give them a chance to make the connection between volume and capacity. In Writing, students will be finishing up their historical fiction stories. In Social Studies, the grade 4 students will be researching an ancient civilization of their choice. The grade 5 students will be examining the benefits and consequences of first contact between European explores and First Nations. Don't forget that Friday is a P.D. Day!

6 Weeks left... crunch time!
With only 6 weeks left we will be using every minute to it's full potential. In Writing, students will have this week to work on their historical fiction writing. The goal will be to have it done by Friday. In Reading, students will be participating in small Literature Circles and will be discussing some short stories and our classes read aloud "Red Wolf". In Health, we will be continuing to explore the physical changes that occur in males and females at puberty. In Science, the grade 4s will be presenting their debate on mining and the grade 5s will be presenting their Energy Conservation P.S.As. In Math, we will be looking at transformational geometry. Students will be rotating through centers, practicing reflections and translations, coordinate geometry, and creating 3-D shapes. Don't forget that Friday is Beach Day! Wear your beach wear, flip flops, etc. Friday is also popcorn sales, bring a loonie and buy some popcorn. Also on Friday we will be having our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. Don't forget to collect your pledges! With only 7 weeks left in the school year, we are kicking things into over drive! Students will be working on several big projects at the same time. Organization and time managements skill will be practiced, improved, and honed!
Some special events this week... Wednesday May 17 is the evening Spring Concert. More information to come. In Math, students will be finishing their surveys, organizing their data, and then graphing it. We will then explore the program Google Forms as a way to collect and organize mass data, quickly, efficiently, and effectively. In Writing, students will continue to explore the characteristics of historical fiction. By the end of the week they will have started planning their own historical fiction story based on an important person, place, or event in Canadian history. In Health, we will be looking at the changes the occur in a body during puberty. Students will be assessing the importance of proper hygiene as they get older. In Science, the grade 5s will be finishing their commercial advertising the importance of conserving electricity and ways in which people can conserve energy on a daily basis. The grade 4s will be finishing their research on the pros and cons of mining and will be participating in their mock debate on Thursday. There are a lot of things happening this week.
Wednesday - Grade 4 Trip to the Clay and Glass museum (If you haven't already paid and signed the consent form on School Day please do so A.S.A.P.). Friday - Track and Field Day!!! Students are asked to come dressed for a day outside. They will need to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, hat, good running shoes for outside, and if they want blanket to sit on while they are cheering on their friends. In Language, we will be exploring historical fiction texts and creating a co-created a list of success criteria that students will use to guide them as they write their own stories. In Math, we will be continuing to explore data management. Specifically, how to create a survey and collect data that will answer a specific question. In Science, the Grade 4s will be researching the pros and cons of mining and will then participate in a mock debate. The Grade 5s will be researching different forms of energy, and energy saving products and will create a PSA commercial informing the public on ways to conserve energy. The May Calendar and Newsletter is now up on the website. Time is just zooming by! It is hard to believe that May is already here.
This week is a short week. Friday is a PD Day, there is no school for students. We will be continuing our new project "Expedition Unknown". This project has students plannning an expedition to a location of their choice. The end goal is to prepare a proposal to request funding for thier expedtiion. Along the way, we will be learning a few things:
In order for this project to work as smoothly as possible I am requesting that any student who is able to bring in their own personal device (Chromebook, ipad, tablet, etc.) to do so. This is completely up to you and your child. Please remind them that the device will only be used for the project and will be kept locked in the cupboard when not in use. No one is required to bring in a device, classroom chromebooks will be available for groups to share. In reading, we will be continuing readers theater. They are working in groups, reading a selection from a book. Focusing on inferring and synthesizing. In writing, we will be starting our final writing project. We will be exploring the genre Historical Fiction. Students will be exploring historical Canadians and their impact on Canadian identity. They will then choose a Canadian and write a historical fiction story about them. In math, we will be starting a unit on data management. Students will be looking at the reasons why people gather data, and explore how it can be displayed. |
