What is Growth Mindset? For the past 30 years, Carol Dweck and her colleagues have been interested in students' attitudes about what it means to fail. They noticed that some of the students bounced back and were resilient after failure while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest of setbacks. After studying the behaviour of thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined the term fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs that people have about learning and intelligence.
When children believe that they can get smarter, the understand that effort makes them stronger. They learn that if they are willing to put in the effort and time they can learn any skill. Read more about why mindsets matter. |
So what does this mean for your child...
Students will learn to tackle challenges because they understand that learning takes a lot of effort. They don't give up when things get difficult, because they have strategies to persevere. They take risks, participate in class, and understand that mistakes are normal when people try hard things.
