Happy New Year!
Welcome back everyone! I hope that everyone had a great break. I enjoyed the extra time with my family, but am ready to get back to learning. As we begin learning in 2020 we will spend some time setting some growth mindset goals and revisiting our classroom expectations. This week will be a reminder of what is expected in our classroom in terms of behaviour, learning, and student responsibilities. As the snowy weather continues, students are reminded that they need to have snow pants, snow boots and mittens/gloves in order to be in the field at nutrition break. Math - Students will be learning to identify geometric patterns through investigations and problems. Reading - We will be continuing our class read aloud, “The Bridge Home”. We will be using our class read aloud to learn about the different roles in a literacy circle. Starting with “summarizer”, “questioner”, and “travel tracer”. Language - We will be starting a unit on media and advertising. Students will be learning to analyze a variety adds, thinking critically about the techniques that the company is using. Social Studies- Students will be continuing the unit on Heritage and Identity: communities in Canada, Past and Present. We will continue to address the big questions by asking the questions, “What does it mean to be Canadian?” and “What are some symbols of Canada?”. This week we will be analyzing some contemporary symbols of Canada. Important Dates: Jan. 14 - ESQ Workshop (at school) Looking forward to another great week of learning!

Good Monday Morning!
As the snowy weather returns students are reminded that they need to have snow pants, snow boots and mittens in order to be in the field at nutrition break. We will be having Engineering Science Quest (ESQ) come in for a workshop on January 14th. The workshop will cost $3.00 per student. In the workshop, students will explore the world of circuits! Please bring in $3.00 ASAP, preferably before this Tuesday. Math - We will be finishing up our unit on decimals, fractions, and percents. We will have a small quiz on Thursday. After that, we will be looking at patterns and algebraic relationships. Reading - We will be continuing our class read aloud, “The Bridge Home”. This week students will be digging deeper into the issue of child labour comparing the character in our read aloud to some real life child labourers. Students will be using the “asking questions” to help them deepen their understanding. Writing - This week we will continue adding to our writers tool box, focusing on adding detail to our writing. Social Studies- Students will be starting a unit on Heritage and Identity: communities in Canada, Past and Present. We will begin by asking the questions, “What does it mean to be Canadian?” and “What are some symbols of Canada?”. Art - We will explore creating winter landscapes using different techniques and materials. Just another reminder that students need to have a pair of gym appropriate indoor shoes. Also, students need to have snow pants and snow boots in order to be in the field at nutrition break. I know a lot of students enjoy playing football at break time and this will require them to have snow pants and snow boots at school. We will be continuing our class discussions on bullying. Students have been very attentive during our discussions so far, discussing strategies for dealing with a bully, sharing stories, and making personal connections to the books read. Have a chat with your child about bullying and ways that we can prevent it. Math - We will be having a quiz on tuesday to finish off our data management unit. Our next unit will look at fractions, percents, and decimals. Students will be exploring the relationship between the three and will practice converting between the three. Reading - We will be looking at the comprehension strategy, Asking Questions. Students will be exploring how asking questions before, during and after reading helps them to deepen their understanding of what they are reading. We will be starting our read aloud of “The Bridge Home”. Each week students will be comparing the section read to another text explored during class time. Students then will make connections between the two texts and themselves. Writing - This week we will continue adding to our writers tool box, focussing on adding detail to our writing. Science - Students will be working hard on their biodiversity research project. We will be sharing our learning in a convention style presentation in the library. The Biodiversity Convention will be held in the library on Wednesday, November 27, from 1:45 - 2:45. This is a drop in event. Parents are invited to come by and see all the amazing projects that A3 has been working so hard on. Good Monday Morning!

This week is is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Ontario. This week is an opportunity for students and staff to reinforce clear and positive messages that bullying is not acceptable in our schools and communities. We will be having class discussions about bullying awareness and prevention as the week goes on and hopefully students will develop a deeper understanding about what bullying is and how to put an end to it. Math - We will be continuing our learning on reading and interpreting data. Students will explore different measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and will look at the difference between discrete and continuous data. Reading - We will be looking at the comprehension strategy, Asking Questions. Students will be exploring how asking questions before, during and after reading helps them to deepen their understanding of what they are reading. In addition, we will be starting some pre-reading activities for our next read aloud, “A Bridge Home”. Ask your child about the book as the week goes on! Writing - This week we will continue to revisit some key writing techniques that they can use to help improve their writing. (power of three and million dollar words). Science - Students will be working hard on their biodiversity research project. We will be sharing our learning in a convention style presentation in the library. The Biodiversity Convention will be held in the library on Friday November 29, from 1:40 - 2:40. This is a drop in event. Parents are invited to come by and see all the amazing projects that A3 has been working so hard on. Just a reminder that as the cooler weather arrives, ALL students need to have a pair of INDOOR and OUTDOOR shoes. The indoor shoes need to be suitable for gym, the outdoor pair, suitable for the weather. Also, please remind your child that they need to come dressed for the weather everyday! It is cold out and sometimes a sweater just doesn’t cut it. Math - We will be starting a unit on linear measurement. Focusing on using the appropriate unit of measurement and converting between different metric units (km,m,cm,mm). Reading - We are looking at point of view and perspective and will be exploring these concepts through a variety of short read alouds. Writing - Students will be continuing their rant. This will be due on Thursday. Science - Students will be starting their final project for the Biodiversity unit. They will be researching an issue affecting biodiversity and will create an action plan that addresses the issue. They will not be allowed to participate in gym if they don’t have proper footwear. Math - We will be finishing up our unit on fractions. There will be a quiz on Tuesday, a review will be going home on Monday. The rest of the week we will be looking at multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10. Reading - We are looking at creating some text to text connections between Red Wolf and other books on Residential schools. Writing - Students will be starting a new writing project this week. They will be stepping into the shoes of an endangered animal and will be writing a rant from their perspective. Science - Students will be starting their final project for the Biodiversity unit. Students will be working on a collaborative project that will highlight their understanding of the main concepts of the book. More on this next week. Reading responses this week will focus on making connections with some of the characters in the independent books that they are reading. Writing - Students have already begun working on their final version of their biography. This is due Thursday. Please check in with your child to see how things are going. Science - We will be continuing with our Biodiversity Unit. This week we will be addressing the question “What impact do humans have on biodiversity?” We will be using Yellowstone National Park as a case study. We have a busy week ahead of us as we finish up a writing task and move on to other projects. Anyone who ordered Herrles Boxes can pick up their order on Wednesday from 3-5:30 in room B3. Picture orders are due by October 8th. In our class this week... Math - We will be learning how to calculate the area of a parallelogram and triangle. There will be a quiz on this on Friday. Writing - We will be finishing up the research on our heroes. Students are working on filling in their graphic organizers with relevant information and details about their hero. Depending on how things go we hopefully will start working on our final drafts before the week is done. The final project will be due next Wednesday. Students will have some options as to how they want to display their information (essay, slideshow, website, poster, etc). Reading - We are finishing up our class read aloud, Red Wolf. Students have been working on making connections to some books that we have been reading as a class. Starting this week students will be starting their Reading Responses based on the independent novels they have chosen to read. This weeks response is “Which character in your book could you see yourself being friends with? Why?” Science - We are going to look at the importance of biodiversity in an ecosystem using Yellowstone park as a case study. Looking forward to another great week of learning! |
