I am so excited that today has finally arrived. All of the hard work and focus will come payoff as the students get a chance to share their sustainable cities. Don't forget that our Sustainable City Expo if today from 2:00 - 3:30. Please come by for a visit. Students will have their presentations, models, and advertisements for their city on display and will be ready to answer any questions you might have about how they ensured their city was sustainable.
This week we will also be having the Stream of Dreams presentation. Kids will learn about the importance of protecting our ground water. In Math, we will continue to look at using decimals and fractions in the real world and in a variety of contexts. In Reading, students will be getting into groups for readers theater and will be practicing their scripts. This week promises to be as exciting as ever!

As always, there is a lot going on in Room 24 and at JWG!
This week the school is celebrating Earth Week by having a special day/event every day this week. On Tuesday we will be have a Lights Out block, where we will be learning using the natural sunlight instead of the bright fluorescents of our class. On Wednesday, it is Water Bottle Wednesday! Everyone is encouraged to bring in their reusable water bottles instead of disposable plastic ones. On Thursday we will be going paperless! Finally, on Friday the school is having a Earth Day Play Day! The last block of the day will be dedicated to outdoor, earth focused play! In our class room we will be keeping with the Earth week theme as we begin to build our sustainable cities using recycled material. If you have anything at home that the students might be able to use to build please send it in! In Math, we will be continuing with our Math Centres. Students are rotating through different activities including problem solving, spheros, Prodigy, independent practise, and much more! The problems this week will focus on working with decimals. In Science, students will be working on a "HyperDoc" to learn about Minerals (Grade 4) and Solar Energy (Grade 5). Ask your child about this fun and interactive learning activity. They access it through Google Classroom. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! I am looking forward to a fun week of learning! I said it last week and I will say it again... time is FLYING!
This past weekend I was very busy learning at the Google Summit in Kitchener. My brain is full of new ideas and add-ons that I can not way to try in room 24. The calendar and newsletter for April is up on the website. This week, we will be focusing on the "Sustainable City" project this week. And as long as everything goes as planned students will begin building mid week. For this project I am asking that kids bring in some recycled material that they will be able to build a model of their city. This project has the kids working in groups to plan their very own sustainable city. They are coming up with the learning goals and success criteria as we go along. They are guiding their project using their own questions, always coming back to the big idea "What does it mean to be sustainable?" As students have progressed through this project so far they have been discovering that planning a city requires more than just deciding what stores to include. This project will require the kids to research sustainable technologies, think critically and creatively about the planning, location, population, utilities, and much more for their city, and work collaborative with their peers. This project incorporates several subjects, including language, math, science, and art. In Math, we will be focusing on solving problems involving decimals and fractions. We will also be exploring block coding with a Sphero in small groups through out the week. Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday April 16 or Monday April 17. If you have not already paid for the Stream of Dreams experience coming to J.W. Gerth please do so my Monday (Sunday night, if you would like to pay via Schoolday). I am working on updating the Sesame accounts, stay tuned! Is time ever flying! We are kicking things up a gear as we continue planning a sustainable city. In Reading, students will be finishing presenting their book talks. They have been going really well so far! In Writing, students will be conducting research, organizing ideas, and writing some non-fiction texts about conserving resources, sustainable development, and their city. In Science, students will be working in a small group researching sustainable energy sources (Grade 5s) and sustainable mining for building materials (Grade 4s). In Math, we will be exploring 3-D shapes. Students will be practice creating 3-D shapes from nets and will explore their properties through investigation. Important things happening around the school: Wednesday April 5- Spring photos! Bring back your forms if you are interested. Thursday April 6 - Family Math Night 6:00 - 7:30 Friday April 7 - PD Day (no school for students) |
