I said it last week and I will say it again... time is FLYING!
This past weekend I was very busy learning at the Google Summit in Kitchener. My brain is full of new ideas and add-ons that I can not way to try in room 24. The calendar and newsletter for April is up on the website. This week, we will be focusing on the "Sustainable City" project this week. And as long as everything goes as planned students will begin building mid week. For this project I am asking that kids bring in some recycled material that they will be able to build a model of their city. This project has the kids working in groups to plan their very own sustainable city. They are coming up with the learning goals and success criteria as we go along. They are guiding their project using their own questions, always coming back to the big idea "What does it mean to be sustainable?" As students have progressed through this project so far they have been discovering that planning a city requires more than just deciding what stores to include. This project will require the kids to research sustainable technologies, think critically and creatively about the planning, location, population, utilities, and much more for their city, and work collaborative with their peers. This project incorporates several subjects, including language, math, science, and art. In Math, we will be focusing on solving problems involving decimals and fractions. We will also be exploring block coding with a Sphero in small groups through out the week. Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday April 16 or Monday April 17. If you have not already paid for the Stream of Dreams experience coming to J.W. Gerth please do so my Monday (Sunday night, if you would like to pay via Schoolday). I am working on updating the Sesame accounts, stay tuned!
